How to Get Into Marketing & Social Media Management

Hi 👋 I’m Amelia (also known in the office as Precious Pudding), FUZE’s Marketing Executive but I didn’t start out in marketing, I spent six years in finance before I leaped into social media management. Yes I got the job without any marketing experience and I thought it was about time I let you in on how you can get into marketing to, what to expect, social media management insights and of course, why it was the best decision ever!

How I Manifested My Marketing Career

I was scrolling on Instagram when a FUZE post popped up on my feed, it caught my attention as it was a funny team video and I loved their vibe. So instead of just thinking “that looks cool”, I stalked a little further into their page and decided I was going to work there. So I put myself out there in the most Amelia way possible, faking it until I make it:

  • I sent a long email (sorry Dan) about why I wanted a job and what I could offer.
  • I created example social media posts for imaginary clients, just to prove I could do it.
  • I even made a fake “Meet the Team” post with my face on it (yep, before I even worked here).

And now? That fake post sits right next to my real one after being trusted with a job. I didn’t have a marketing degree, I didn’t go to uni and I didn’t have years of agency experience. What I did have was creativity, confidence and the willingness to try. And honestly? That’s enough to get started.

You Don’t Need a Degree to Get Into Marketing 🚪

One of the biggest myths about marketing (especially digital marketing) is that you need a degree to get started. Spoiler: you don’t.

Here’s what you actually need:

  • Confidence – Believe you can do it, even if your CV isn’t screaming “marketer.”
  • Creativity – Show off your skills by making your own content, mock campaigns or even fake brand posts like I did.
  • Consistency – Social media is about showing up, not just once, but again and again. Same goes for your career journey.
  • A bit of sass – Because let’s be honest, social media is meant to be fun.

What to Expect in Social Media Management 📲

So, although I am a Marketing Executive and touch on many sides of digital marketing, my main focus at FUZE is Social Media Management. So, what’s it actually like working in social media?

  • It’s creative – Think content calendars, watching lots of TikToks, Instagram grids and creating posts and captions for clients to help them reach their goals.
  • It’s data-driven – Posting isn’t just about what looks pretty. You’ll be tracking analytics, running paid ads and tweaking strategies to hit goals.
  • It’s fast-paced – Algorithms change overnight, new trends pop up daily and you’ve got to adapt quickly. If you like variety, you’ll thrive.
  • It’s rewarding – Nothing beats seeing a post blow up or watching a client’s following grow because of your strategy.

It’s not all glamorous or “easy”, expect some long days, a lot of multitasking and the occasional “please fix this post ASAP” DM at 9pm. But if you love storytelling, creativity and building communities online, it’s one of the most exciting careers out there.

Final Thoughts 💡

My journey from finance to marketing proves one thing: if you want it, go for it. Social media management is about creativity, adaptability and putting yourself out there.

If you’re sitting there thinking, “I wish I could do that”, here’s your sign: you can. You don’t need permission, a degree or years of experience, you just need to start. And who knows? Maybe one day you’ll be writing your own blog too. 😉

Until next time,
Amelia 💕
