Google Ads vs Meta Ads: What’s Best for SMEs in Essex?

If you run a small or medium-sized business in Essex, there’s a good chance you’ve asked the question or at least thought about: should I be spending my marketing budget on Google Ads or Meta Ads?

The slightly annoying answer? It depends, as it really is a wider conversation that requires more detail!

The useful answer? They do two different jobs and after talking about your offering, your target audience and what their likely pattern is, we can come to a well-devised conclusion. So lets jump into what they are

Google Ads are great for capturing people already searching

Google Ads is at its best when someone already knows what they need. Think “accountant in Colchester”“commercial cleaner Essex” “i need a solicitor” or “emergency plumber near me”. We have businesses ranking for all of these across paid and organic search.

Google Search campaigns use keywords to help match ads with relevant searches, while location targeting allows businesses to focus their advertising on particular areas, cities and radius targets.

That makes Google Ads particularly useful for service-based businesses where there’s already clear demand.

You’re not necessarily trying to convince someone they need a solicitor, mortgage adviser or new boiler from scratch. You’re getting your business in front of them when they’re actively looking for one.

HOWEVER… yes Performance Max, Display Ads and Youtube Ads can cover this aspect of placing your goods or services in front of an audience that isn’t currently looking but ultimately would recommend this approach to sit alongside a more traditional search campaign as well so you can build an ideal audience in your Google Ads account.

The catch? Popular searches can be competitive. Good campaign structure, strong landing pages, sensible targeting and regular optimisation are important if you want your budget working hard rather than disappearing into the Google void.

Meta Ads: get discovered before the search

Meta Ads across Facebook and Instagram work differently. Rather than relying on somebody searching for your service, you can reach potential customers while they’re scrolling.

Meta offers campaign objectives covering areas including awareness, traffic, engagement, leads and sales. Businesses can also target audiences using factors such as location and build Custom Audiences to reconnect with people who have previously interacted with them. The most effective here is utilising Email Audiences to build Lookalike Audiences to have the confidence that your spend is going towards an audience you want to see it.

For Essex businesses wanting Meta Ads Management with something visual, exciting or easy to demonstrate, Meta can be brilliant.

Restaurants, retailers, events, attractions, property brands and e-commerce businesses can use strong creative to make someone stop mid-scroll and think: “Ooh, I want that.”

The Catch for Meta Ads they aren’t as trusted as Google Ads, there are far more instances of Scams that occur across Meta, which results in a lot of distrust in the platform. This often leads to users being interested in the product or service and then going to Google it.

So, which is better?

A simple way to think about it is that Google captures demand. Meta helps create it.

If customers are already searching for your service, Google Ads could be the stronger starting point. If you need to build awareness, showcase a product or reach people before they know your brand exists, Meta Ads could make more sense.

And sometimes? The best answer is both.

Meta can introduce somebody to your business, while Google can help capture them later when they’re ready to search, compare and convert.

At FUZE, we start with the business goal, audience and budget rather than automatically declaring one platform the winner.

Because the best advertising platform isn’t the trendiest one. It’s the one getting the right customers to take action. What to discuss where you’re business i likely to fall, give us a call now!
